Roseline Alionya Takes Over ODM Youth League, Demands Stake in Broad-Based Government Share
Roseline Alionya has officially declared herself the president of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Youth League, taking over a seat she claims has remained dormant and illegally occupied for nearly a decade.
Speaking during her maiden address as youth leader, Alionya—a former chairperson of the ODM Young Captains, educator, and policy researcher stated that she stepped into the role following her resignation from the Young Captains, targeting what she described as an overdue leadership transition within the orange party’s youth structures.
"I have occupied the vacant seat that has been idle for the past nine years because the occupant was there illegally, having surpassed the age limit of a youth," Alionya declared. "We are not here as a generation that will wait for leadership to be handed to us. We are the generation that must prepare, organize ourselves, and take our rightful place."

Key Highlights of the Address
•Reclaiming Youth Identity: Alionya challenged party members to dismantle the stereotype framing young political actors as "goons" or mere crowd-fillers during elections.
•Demand for 50/50 Governance Inclusion: Addressing party leadership, she insisted that the youth must secure a defined percentage of national and county opportunities within the broad-based government framework.
•Mobilization Strategy Ahead of 2027: Outlined plans for county outreach, voter registration drives, policy debate forums, and campus engagements across universities and TVET colleges.
•Strict Age Adherence: Stressed that youth structures will enforce the constitutional threshold defining youth between the ages of 18 and 35.
From Spectators to Policy Contributors
Alionya called on the party’s youth to pivot from peripheral roles to core strategic positions, leveraging skills in research, digital communication, policy drafting, and community organization ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
"Our responsibility cannot begin and end with asking what the party is giving us; we must also ask what we are giving to the party," she noted, calling for transparent and accessible nomination processes for young candidates seeking elective seats.
Acknowledging the legacy of ODM founder Raila Odinga and party veterans, Alionya noted that while the youth honor the democratic struggles of previous generations, every era must define its own course.
The transition comes amid heightened calls within the party to revamp its national youth leadership to better align with statutory age limits and mobilize young voters ahead of the next electoral cycle.
