Rail transport in Kenya is set for a significant boost as the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) nears the official reopening of the Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) corridor linking Uplands, Kijabe, and Longonot. Following an extensive restoration period, the corporation successfully conducted a test ride along the section, signaling a return to normalcy for a vital trade artery.               The train used during the test run had KRC officials and journalists among others on board.     Overcoming Nature's Obstacles   The corridor has been out of service since the heavy "above normal" rainfall experienced in April and May 2024. During that period, severe flooding washed away entire sections of the track near Kijabe, rendering the line impassable and halting transit between Mombasa and the Kenyan hinterland.   The closure had a ripple effect on the regional economy, disrupting the flow of: • Agricultural Essentials: Farm inputs and ...

Image
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has come out in strong support of a new government directive to restrict the licensing of foreign doctors, while simultaneously launching a scathing attack on private hospitals for what it calls the "modern-day slavery" of the medical workforce.   In a press statement released on January 8, 2026, KMPDU Secretary-General Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah declared that the era of treating doctors as "cheap, disposable labour" is over. The union’s stance follows a major policy shift by Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale, who recently announced that the government would stop the routine renewal of licenses for foreign practitioners to prioritize the thousands of unemployed Kenyan doctors.       Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah, Secretary General of the KMPDU, leads a press conference regarding the systemic exploitation of medical practitioners and the flagrant abuse of immigration laws by private h...
