Advocate Kenneth Wilson Urges Lawyers to Embrace AI in Legal Practice

Advocate of the High Court and MMC Asafo partner, Kenneth Wilson, has called on members of the legal fraternity to embrace artificial intelligence (AI), describing it as a transformative tool that is already reshaping the practice of law.
Speaking at a recent legal forum, Wilson emphasized that AI is not a threat to lawyers but rather an opportunity for those willing to adapt. “Many argue that artificial intelligence is here to replace lawyers. To the contrary, lawyers who embrace AI will replace those who refuse to adapt,” he said.
Wilson noted that the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has already alerted its members that AI is here to stay, while the judiciary has begun using AI to summarize the vast volumes of documents filed in court. He stressed that lawyers must learn to master these tools responsibly, warning against overreliance.
He cited a case in the United States where a lawyer was reprimanded for presenting fabricated precedents generated by AI. “We must think. AI is a tool, not a substitute for human judgment,” Wilson cautioned.

Highlighting accessibility, Wilson dismissed the notion that AI will only benefit wealthy clients. He explained that everyday tools like Google’s Gemini and Apple’s AI features are already integrated into smartphones, making them widely available. While premium AI services may require subscriptions, he argued that knowledge and skill in using these tools matter more than wealth.
Wilson concluded by affirming that AI is not the future but the present, urging lawyers to adopt it to enhance efficiency and remain relevant in a rapidly evolving profession.
