Rift Widens: UDA Labels Some Media Outlets a 'Threat to National Security' over Security Official Profiling

In an unprecedented escalation of hostilities between Kenya's ruling party and the press, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has issued a sweeping condemnation of some media outlets, labeling them "political hirelings" and "scavengers" intent on destabilizing the country.

UDA Secretary-General Hassan Omar slammed some media outlets as ‘Political Hirelings,’  and scavengers intent on destabilizing the country.

Claims of Political Capture in the Newsroom

The UDA statement claims that sections of the Kenyan press have entirely abandoned their constitutional duty to report verified, impartial facts. Instead, the ruling party alleges that media coverage has been weaponized by prominent opposition political figures and their alleged surrogates within the press to advance a narrow, myopic agenda.

The party alleged that certain editors, producers, and anchors are deeply conflicted, causing the Kenyan public to lose trust in their reporting. According to the UDA, these platforms are prioritizing sensationalism over verification and presenting opinion as absolute truth.

"Drop the Mics and Join the Ballot"

In a sharp ultimatum, Sen. Omar slammed several unnamed television and radio presenters for engaging in "journalistic gymnastics" and "outright street activism" under the guise of media freedom.

The ruling party explicitly dared these prominent media figures to step out from behind their studio desks and face the government directly in the political arena:

The Challenge: "We invite those responsible to resign from their media roles and join the political arena if they wish to engage in politics. We are ready to square it out in a political duel rather than hiding behind the veil of the freedom of the media."

                  Accusations of Compromising National Security

The UDA's criticism extends beyond political bias, elevating the conflict to a matter of state security. The party accused the targeted media outlets of actively profiling and undermining key security chiefs and government administrators, including:

•The Inspector General of Police

•The Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry

•The Principal Secretary and the wider Ministry of Interior

Furthermore, the ruling party alleged that prime-time news slots are being used to "sanitize, glorify, or justify unlawful conduct," effectively turning newsrooms into platforms that normalize criminality and present lawlessness as a fashionable act of courage.

Rely on Government Channels, UDA Urges Citizens

Arguing that traditional media gatekeepers have completely abandoned their obligations to the public, the UDA advised Kenyans to bypass mainstream reporting. The statement urges citizens to practice strict media literacy, verify information across multiple sources, and instead rely on official government public communication channels to get the truth.

While the UDA maintained that it remains fundamentally committed to a free press as guaranteed by the Constitution, it demanded an immediate return to the core principles of factual accuracy, editorial balance, and intellectual rigor.
