Arise, Awake’: Church Declares War on Political Impunity, Rallies Gen Z to Save Kenya's Democracy

By Tumaini

In one of its most severe rebukes of the state in recent history, the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has released a definitive pastoral letter declaring war on the political corruption, impunity, and violence holding the country hostage.

Titled "Arise, Awake, For Your Time Has Come," the scathing statement emerged from a high-stakes executive committee convention held in Limuru. The council is demanding an immediate, structural overhaul of national governance ahead of the 2027 General Election.

National Council of Churches of Kenya released a definitive pastoral letter calling out political corruption, impunity and violence among other issues bedeviling the country.

       State-Induced Poverty Weaponized

The NCCK laid bare an agonizing socio-economic landscape, fiercely criticizing an unbearable cost of living driven by aggressive over-taxation and a toxic business environment. The church took specific aim at the absolute failure of the Social Health Authority (SHA/SHIF) rollout, noting that the medical crisis has left vulnerable Kenyans to pay medical bills entirely out of pocket.

The council warned political elites to stop using this state-induced poverty as a weapon to manipulate starving voters with cheap, short-term financial handouts.

"At the macro level, the economy is suffocating due to a toxic business environment and over-taxation... We appeal to Kenyans to refuse to be politically swayed with the few breadcrumbs being thrown before them," the letter reads. "Your vote is your birthright. Do not sell it for temporary tokens."

          Condemning 'Diabolical' Political Thuggery

Turning its sights to national security, the council condemned what it called the "immoral and diabolical" recruitment of unemployed youth by politicians to violently disrupt protests and desecrate holy spaces. The church highlighted the disturbing recent invasion of the All Saints Cathedral by state-sponsored goons.

The church directly challenged the Inspector General of Police, warning that he will be held personally accountable if security officers continue to shield or display "comradeship" with the wealthy political financiers orchestrating this lawlessness.

Gen Z Recognized as True Custodians of Destiny

Crucially, the church formally recognized the youth as the true custodians of Kenya's destiny. Expressly praising the Gen Z movement for bravely demanding transparency, justice, and institutional reform, the NCCK condemned the police's excessive force, state-sponsored abductions, and fatal shootings of peaceful protesters.

Rather than allowing this revolutionary energy to fade, the council passionately implored young Kenyans to channel their power into the ballot box. It urged them to register to vote, scrutinize leaders by their fruits, and run for office themselves to alter the country’s democratic trajectory.

              Pulpits Declared Out of Bounds

To prevent the corruption of faith by state actors, the NCCK instituted radical new guidelines to protect sacred spaces. The council announced a complete ban on political campaigns, hate speech, and manipulative fundraising from church pulpits.

Signed on June 25, 2026, the manifesto stands as a historic line in the sand. The NCCK's message is unmistakable: Kenya's future belongs to its youth, and the church will no longer tolerate the systematic exploitation of its people.
