Sonko Secures Full Registration for NEDP, Signals Full-Throttle Return to Nairobi Politics

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has received the official green light for his new political vehicle, the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), cementing his decisive return to the political arena ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) formally presented the Certificate of Full Registration for the NEDP to Mr. Sonko on Tuesday morning. This crucial clearance moves the NEDP from provisional status to a fully registered political party, granting it the authority to field and sponsor candidates across the country.

Setting Sights on Nairobi

The party’s immediate and confirmed focus is the highly competitive Nairobi County elections in 2027. The registration milestone paves the way for a major political battle for the control of the capital city, which is expected to intensify with Sonko’s formal re-entry.

The "Mwananchi" Movement

In a statement following the registration, Mr. Sonko articulated the party's foundational philosophy, positioning the NEDP as a grassroots organization focused on the common citizen.

He described the NEDP as “a party for the people by the people that speaks to the needs of the common mwananchi [citizen].” This messaging clearly aims to mobilize support from ordinary citizens and connect with the popular appeal that characterized his previous political campaigns.

The formal registration marks what the former Governor describes as “the beginning of amazing possibilities that will change the Kenyan political landscape.” With the paperwork now complete, the stage is set for the NEDP to begin its countrywide rollout and solidify its strategy for challenging the incumbents in Nairobi and beyond.
